Moving To A Smaller Home? 4 Ways To Declutter For The Big Move

If your last child has finally moved out of the house, it might be time to think about downsizing. Being an empty nester doesn't mean that you have to live in a home that's outgrown its usefulness.

If you've decided to sell your family-sized home and move into a smaller one, you'll probably want to declutter before you move. Here are some easy tips that will help you reduce the amount of personal property you need to take with you.

Start Early

It took years to collect your personal belongings. You can't expect to sort through it in just a couple of days. The time to start decluttering is as soon as you start shopping for a new home. When you start early, you allow yourself enough time to really think about your property.

Pack One Room at a Time

Instead of trying to get the entire house packed all at once, go through your home one room at a time. Start in one corner of the room and work your way around until you've sorted through each item in the room.

Divide each room into three sections – keep, give away and discard. Once the room is divided into sections, pack up the belongings you're going to keep, arrange to have your give-away items picked up and throw away your discard pile as soon as you can. As you finish packing a room, shut the door and move on to the next.

Fill One Trash Bag a Day

You probably have clutter in every room of the house. Even before you're ready to pack, you could be reducing the amount of clutter by sorting through papers, cupboards and closets. Make it a point to fill one trash bag every day. Some things to throw in your daily trash bags include;

  • Papers that you no longer need

  • Broken items that you'll never fix

  • Sets that no longer have all the pieces

  • Clothes that are outdated or damaged

Limit Yourself

You're trying to declutter so you have less to pack. Avoid the temptation to keep everything by limiting your packing space. Decide on a specific number of packing containers per room and stick to that number. This will ensure that you choose carefully when sorting through your belongings.

Now that it's time to move to a smaller home, you want to clear out the clutter. These handy tips will help you get rid of the things that are taking up space. When it's time for the local movers to arrive, you won't have to pay to move things that you'll never use again.
